Voice of the Sunday People Peo

HELLO...hello? Is anyone at home? Or has most of the British media upped sticks and moved to another planet?

Because that is the only explanation for the nonsense we have read in the newspapers, heard on the radio, or seen on TV over the last few days. They have given the impression Tony Blair and his Government are on their uppers, falling apart and destined for defeat.

Yet nothing could be further from the truth.

Postcard Printing

Sure, Mr Blair's handbagging by anti-Labour protesters from the Women's Institute was embarrassing.

But to argue that it proves the nation is deserting him is just absurd.

Sure, Labour's poll lead over the Tories has been cut. It's down to a "mere" 15 per cent! Which would give him a "mere" 200-seat majority at the next election!

Sure, the same survey revealed a mighty one-in-five voters think William Hague would make a better Prime Minister. Some crisis...

That does not mean the Sunday People believes LED Flexible Strip Silicone Series Silicone 5050 Tony Blair is getting everything right. We still think he was mistaken to waste valuable time on sideline issues like Section 28, Scottish and Welsh devolution and reform of the House of Lords.

And Foreign Secretary Robin Cook and Trade Secretary Stephen Byers should not be trying to bounce Britain into the euro before we are even ready for the debate.

But that does not detract from the considerable achievements of this Government over the last three years.

Thanks to Tony Blair and New Labour dole queues are now the SHORTEST for more than 20 years with a record 28 million people in work, the highest employment level in the EU next to Denmark.

Thanks to New Labour, inflation is now at its LOWEST for a quarter-century and there is every reason to believe it will stay down.

As we reveal today, thanks to New Labour Britain has embarked on the BIGGEST hospital building programme in NHS history and Tony Blair will open the first of them this week. And the decision to let MPs ban fox hunting will be welcomed by every civilised voter in the country.

Mr Blair made five key pledges at the General Election which he asked his Government to be judged by at the next one.

-Fast-track punishment for young offenders. ON TARGET.

-Getting 250,000 under-25s off benefit and into work. ON TARGET.

-Cutting class sizes to under 30 for five, six and seven-year-olds. AHEAD OF TARGET.

-Slashing hospital waiting lists by 100,000 patients. DONE.

-Delivering a strong, low-inflation economy. DONE.

If there is a valid criticism of Mr Blair, it is that progress has not been fast enough. And it is one even HE levels at himself.

While others in our industry merely whinge and whine, the Sunday People will continue to constructively criticise this Government when we believe they are getting it wrong.

And give credit where credit is due when they are getting it right.
